Confident, Assertive & Argumentative Personality

There are 3 general categories of personality- head, heart, and gut. In general, those with anger issues are part of that third category. Some people ignore or repress anger (Nines and Ones) while Eights express anger and never want to show vulnerability.

Yvette Quiroga was her hometown’s first female Latina mayor at 27.

I have come to understand Point 8 of the Enneagram because of my best friend and college roommate Yvette Quiroga. When I met her at 18, the first thing she said was that she was going to return to her small town to run it. Nine years after I met her, she became Mendota’s first female Latina mayor. She has instinctive confidence, energy, and independence. She has always been concerned with justice. She looks out for her friends and defends those that can’t defend themselves.

The flip-side of this assertive personality type is that Eights can be controlling and argumentative. Group decisions are problematic for Eights because they want to be in control. Eights want to be respected more than status (like a Point 3) or being liked. They are unafraid of confrontation which is almost opposite to Point 9 Conflict-Avoiders. They are natural leaders but can be misunderstood.

Looking at the enneagram, Eights are part of the instinctive triad along with 9 and 1. Under stress, Eights go towards Point 5 and can become fearful. When…
