Charming, ambitious, self-confident and driven people stand out to me

I don’t talk about him much but my father has had the most influence on my life. He has a larger-than-life personality and I wanted to be just like him. He’s 88 now and still a master storyteller.

My high-achieving father

My father rose to great heights in his career. Job offers used to pour in and he was always off to bigger and better things. He is a born leader who inspires others. The Life of the Party.

But this is not an article about my father. It’s about high achievers and personality. As a writer, I draw up character sketches before I write stories. I want my characters to be relatable and believable. My study of the enneagram and personality types has helped me greatly in character development. I have always been drawn to high achievers and my stories often focus on them.

As much as I wanted to be just like my dad, it wasn’t until my teens that I realized that I couldn’t will myself to be outgoing. I have never been the life of the party. I’m more of an observer. I fantasize about being popular and I gravitate towards people that have that je ne sais quoi. Like my best friend. Our parties were so epic that our friends still talk about them 20 years later. But they weren’t really our parties, we jokingly refer to them as Club…
