Don’t Mess with Ouija Boards

When I was in high school, a friend gave me a ouija board after it freaked her out. I was told that you couldn’t burn it or throw it away, but you could give it away.

The last time I touched the planchette, I was 16 years old. I had recently moved from Southern California to Northern California and was exceedingly lonely. I still wonder if I had invited evil into my life by messing with spirits because some crazy things happened after that last ouija board experience.

Towards the end of my junior year, I went out for the varsity cheerleading team. One of my calculus classmates was on the team and she taught me the routine for the audition. Because I knew the routine so well, a lot of girls practiced with me. I practiced for many, many hours. I didn’t have anything else going on in my life so I would practice with whomever was available. I distinctly remember practicing at Pizza Hut where I worked. My co-workers would put a dime in the juke box and we would practice behind the counter.

One night, I was practicing with two freshmen and they wanted to ask the ouija board if we would make the team. We all desperately wanted to be cheerleaders.

“Is Carol going to make the team?” my two young friends asked the board first. I kind of repeated them saying Will I make the team. The three of us had our hands on the planchette and it flew to Yes. I accused the blonde of moving the thing. But both girls denied it. Then we asked if the blonde would make the…
