Listen to Whispers

When I was pregnant with my daughter Julia, I listened to something (or someone) that saved my life.

Me & my baby

I was a litigator at a law firm when I was pregnant with my second child. I had just finished a depostion and was driving back to my office in the middle of the day. Light traffic. I was exiting the freeway and there was some construction around the nearby airport.

Just after I exited, I heard an urgent whispered voice tell me to stop. I told myself not to discount the voice and I quickly looked in my rear view mirror to see if anyone was behind me before I hit the brakes.

I answered out loud, “But the light is green.” I didn’t have clear visibility because the exit curved as it approached a stoplight. I felt foolish slowing down when the light was clearly green. Luckily there was no one immediately behind me honking to go faster. I proceeded through the intersection near downtown San Jose.

A classic station wagon blew through a red light and narrowly missed me. The driver looked like a lost little old lady with glasses. The sandwiched air whistled slightly as the station wagon passed in front of me.

If I hadn’t stepped on the brakes, the car would have T-boned me. There were several orange cones around the intersection due to airport construction but the roads weren’t closed. The other driver had probably…
